Hi Guys!! I am your polo sec, Soph.

The time has come for the annual polo tournaments, nice and local for us all down at the kings docks here in Liverpool. There are 10 other unis entered this year and come down on 4 Sundays throughout the winter. This sunday will be the first of these, and lets face it probably the warmest!! Great opportunity to get hooked on polo!! There are great facilities at the docks with a floating marina with really hot showers and heated changing rooms and mini cafe area

For those of you that don’t know, polo is an awesome bit of fun, no scary rivers to worry about, just 5 of u, a ball, flat water and a goal!! Gets the adrenaline going as everyone wants to win as soon as u get on the pitch! loadsa chit chat, loadsa time to watch the other teams play and then a dam good feeling at the end of the day!!

This wednesday at the pool, 3-5 is a great chance to practice a bit of polo and get the basics of the great game…I have also cranked out a MASSIVE post on the polo part of the forum of rules and basics to get you going, even useful for those of you who need quick reminder of the main rules and couple of tips and
pointers! so please spare a few hours and go and read it!
So basically we need about 10 lads and 10 ladys for our teams on Sunday…so if you can get down there let me know! polo@lucanoe.info
Tournament starts at 9 AM prompt which means about 7.30 at the sheds. That is early guys!! But what else are you gona be doing on a Sunday…nothing!! The start needs to be PROMPT too, else the whole day is late and we will be in trouble - seeing as most teams travel from places like Birmingham and we literally roll out of bed and we are there! Cost will depend how many people turn up, no more than £5 per person.

If you are coming on Sunday, then it would be great to see you at the pool on Wednesday, anyone who comes on Wednesday will stand the best chance of a place in the team on Sunday - get your name on the list!

Turn up anyway even if its just to support! It will go on most of the day. Playing or supporting, make sure u bring lots of warm clothes, the wind is crazy down there so don’t under estimate it! If you’re playing, bring some dry clothes u can wear over ur wet kit to keep u warm, as well as dry dry clothes to wear after. Bring lots of food to snack on and lots of liquids and usual paddling attire!

See you all on wednesday, 3-5 at the pool.

After a lovely extra hour in bed (due to a river change - sometimes you actually CAN thank the British weather for some things!) and getting everything loaded we were off . . headed for the River Dee and all its delights (I’m specifically thinking of the hot chocolate at the end of the day :D )

There was a big mix of people, from complete beginners (me and a few others) who were expected to swim, and did … lots … to the experienced paddlers who were NOT expected to swim (*ahem* . . . John!) So anyway, after splitting into groups according to experience, we were off!

Our group (i.e. the ones who had never paddled before - Mat, Emma, Dave and myself) had Mary, John and Jo to look after us, and did a fantastic job of rescuing our boats and paddles every time we took a swim :D We started by learning how to (forgive me but I’ve forgotten the ‘technical’ term) but basically to go across the river pointing upstream without going downstream, which some of us had more difficulty with than others (i’ll hang my head with shame now lol) we then did loads more fun stuff like learning how to break in and out , turn and brace . . .

We then had a swimmer rescue demonstration by Jo and Mary. So, after Jo threw himself in (classical belly-flop) and proceeded to white-water swim it was Mary’s job to throw him a rope and pull him in from further downstream. Or, that is what should have happened . . Mary and her fantastic rope throwing left Jo swimming with no boat, paddle or rope . . note to paddlers . . . if swimming and see Mary with a rope, don’t stop swimming and hope for her rope to reach you . . . it wont!

So after a good giggle (sorry Mary) we headed further up the river to do our first bit of white water, wow, so amazing! We then carried on downstream encountering some more white water on the way (weeeeeeeeeeeeee) it was then decided that a good hot shower and drink was called for so we called it a day.

Afterwards we went to the pub and had a chance to chat and see how everyone else had got on - swimmingly it seemed (not much pun intended). So anyway, with lots of laughs and aching muscles we were on our way back and excitedly awaiting the next trip!

Thanks to Martin for organising a great day and to everyone involved in lifts, swims and rescues!

Report and photos by: Susan B

Results at: Canoeslalom.co.uk

A few trips round the one way system in Stone later (courtesy of a very sleepy navigator in the car that had the directions) we finally made it to the Stafford and Stone Canoe Club. After some tea and breakfast we all got ready and headed down to have a look at the course.

Paddlers:

Claire P, Helen J, Martin, Aussie Dave, Nicky, Tessa, Matt, Hannah, Charlotte and me.

First down for our lot was Matt in the K1, and then it was the girls K1 with everyone, apart from myself (I went for an early swim), crossing the line. Next down were Dave and Martin in their C1s.

Then it was time for some lunch and sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. Our second runs started with Matt again (who discovered that sobering up doesn’t help improve your time…), then the girls K1 (but not me, as I knackered my finger during my earlier swim :-( ), and Dave and Martin in the C1s.

Everyone else did really well, especially Claire and Helen, who came first and second respectively and both got promoted to Div 3, and Dave and Martin who should have been promoted to Div 3 but couldn’t be due to a lack of C1 competitors (they were the only ones running).

Thanks to Claire for organising the trip and driving, and Helen J and Dom for driving too!

Hi, the Wednesday polo training sessions this month are: 22nd and 29th Oct, 3pm til 5pm at the university swimming pool.

For dates of all the Wednesday pool sessions, usually, (but not always), alternate weeks, check the Calendar.

Wednesday pool sessions are mainly for canoe polo - so get yourself to the pool to get some training in, or to see what polo is all about!

There will also be some opportunity to do other activities in the small pool (rolling practice etc.)

Get in the polo mood - have a go and have a practice - ready for the upcoming polo tournaments at the docks. The docks polo “for fun” tournaments this term are on the following dates, at the Liverpool Queens Dock Watersport facility - put these in your diary!

Sunday 2nd November 2008 and Sunday 7th December 2008

In the spring term, there will be two more:

Sunday 15th February 2009 and Sunday 15th March 2009

These are a great opportunity to have fun playing polo against other teams of about the same standard as us - i.e. other university teams from the NW, and a good build up ready for BUSA and the Christie cup. If you would like to play in these tournaments, get in touch with Sophie and Nick at the pool session or in the pub, or on polo@lucanoe.info Or if you want to watch and cheer and take photos, that’s good too, its good to watch, and there is a tuck shop for you to get a cuppa tea and cake. And afterwards, of course, to the pub.

TYNE TOUR

WHAT:  One of the best club trips of the year involving paddling the Tyne, witnessing one of the best EVER firework displays from the hillside, going to one of the craziest and most energetic Ceilieh’s you’ll ever go to and generally having a fantastic time with the rest of the club and many many more canoe clubs too.

Britain’s largest participation canoeing event “

WHEN:  7TH to 9TH NOVEMBER.

MEET PLACE:  6pm at sheds on 7th November to pack the bus… no faff allowed!!!

Friday night:   Arrive and set up camp… really quickly so we can go to the pub and be merry!!!

SLEEPING:  We will be camping, so find yourself a tent buddy or two and a tent would also be helpful.  DON’T PANIC… if you don’t have a tent that’s not a problem, there are lots of tents among us and so no one will be roofless.   Just have a chat to me in the pub and I will find you a space in someone’s tent… all is wellJ!!

FOOD: You will need to sort your own food on this trip, however this is made incredibly easy by the rather large 24 hour Tesco just a short wander from the camp site.  It’s best to buy everything once you get there as this saves space in the mini bus.   Also there are usually burger vans etc on site for those of you that are too hung-over to cook your own Bacon buttys in the morning!!!  Saturday evening you usually find us heading for the local chippy, or if you’re a little more sophisticated the curry house which I am told is rather good, I however prefer a good traditional British meal ;-).

Saturday Paddling: We spend the day on the Tyne river… an enjoyable fairly easy river suitable for most.  The atmosphere is made fantastic by the hundreds of paddlers bobbing down together.

Toilets and showers: Toilets are on site and showers… YES amazingly we get to have nice HOT showers after the river just down the road at the sports centre…civilised eh!!!

Saturday night: We head out for food and then to watch a fantastic firework display from the hillside before heading back to the sports centre for the Ceilieh!!!  The ceilieh is a huge country dancing type affair complete with live band and is great fun for all, whether co-ordinated or not!!!

Sunday paddling: We’ll do a river on the way back weather dependant, i.e. we’ll go where the rain falls.

Sunday evening:  We’ll finish up the weekend with a good Sunday pub session in Kelly’s to reminisce about the weekends events and tell those silly enough to miss it what they actually missed!!!

cOST:  £40.   I know it seems a lot guys but its worth it… it pays for petrol, bus hire, camping, river access and the ceilieh, so you do get a lot for it!!!

WANT TO COME????:  Then see me; Helen (Ginge),  you will find me in the pool, in AJ’s after the pool or on weekend trips so come have a chat and FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS.  I have to book the tickets so if you want to come you need to let me know by next weeks pool session (16th October).  It really is a great weekend… just in case I hadn’t mentioned how great it is!!

WARNING!!!!! THIS TRIP IS NOT TO BE MISSED!!!!!!

It appears there’s no need to advertise this trip as there are already 24 names on the trip list!

For those interested in the final few places, here are a few details for next weekend:

We’ll be camping at Sleningford Water Mill campsite, near West Tanfield, Yorkshire, have a look on google maps or google earth to see the lovely scenary surrounding and the pub in the nearby town. At the campsites are toilets, showers and a kayaking shop if you’ve been inspired enough to make purchases while we’re there.

We’ll be paddling a couple of lovely nearby rivers, the Ure which ends at the campsite and a couple of rivers in the lake district on the way home.
You’ll need: tents, sleeping bags, roll mats, breakfasts, lunch, tea, cooking things, warm clothes, dry bags/ carrier bags for your wet things. Ask people if you’re puzzled of what to bring.

If you’re interested in this trip, email jon (feed_me_more_food@hotmail.com) to say you’re wanting to go, and check out the website for the trip reports from the last couple of years - AndyR report from 2007, Ade’s report from 2006.
