Socials this week:

Tuesday is pancake day (we moved it), at Bagot St, number fifty one from 6.30ish. Bring: drinks and toppings and an empty tummy. Pancakes will be provided. There is a prize for the person who eats the most pancakes. The prize is a pancake. There is a prize for the person who wins the cornflake packet limbo. That prize is also a pancake.

Wednesday is AU night - The theme is “Ninjas”. Any kind of ninja is fine - pink ninja, tweed ninja, floral ninja, paddle ninja, or a plain straightforward hero ninja - you mainly need a scarf to cover your face, and maybe some kind of lightning-fast enchanted weapon. Get your ticket from the guild beforehand, and meet at Walkabout at 9pm. Contact is: Tammy

Wednesday 18th Feb, David Fairweather, “One Thing Leads To Another,” Liverpool Guild of Students, 8pm

Kayak talk - as usual, 8pm in the Guild, tickets £4 (£3 kids). We’re going out for supper beforehand 6pm Kimos, the more the merrier, then the downstairs bar in the guild. If you can help Mary with putting out chairs or setting up beforehand, that’s great: mary_hanc@hotmail.com

Please tell your friends, especially folk who like travel stories and outdoorsy things - there’s a facebook event so that you can invite them.

Going to be a top talk - White water in far off places - I’ve seen part of the Kyrgyztan video at a previous talk and it was very top. Here’s the blurb:

‘David Fairweather got hooked on white water when he was a teenager, and has been paddling pretty much every spare moment since. You can read about his various adventures on the Team Pyranha Blog, the British Universities Kayak Expedition pages, and his paddling photo blog.

“I kayak. Occasionally I do other things, like some work. But generally I try and spend as much time as possible in a canoe or kayak of some description. My passion is for adventures; kayaking in new and far flung places, seeing new things, and meeting people from different places around the globe. I also like to take photos, mainly of kayaking.”

David’s passion for adventures has taken him to a fair number of far flung places: In 2005, he joined the first British Universities Kayak Expedition, and they did some rather amazing stuff in Kyrgystan. Then he just fancied a trip to India. Morocco. Nepal. Italy. It seems that one thing just leads to another…

Join us for an evening of white water adventures, cool videos and beautiful pictures - actually, not all kayaking pictures, some of other pretty things too, inspiring people, amazing wildlife and extraodinary places. But a fair number of kayaking ones, it has to be said…’

Not this weekend after all - too snowy/icy to get to the hut. Being rescheduled - likely date 20 March - please keep a watch out for announcement, xh

Reminder: This weekend there’s a weekend trip to North Wales, hooray! We’ll be doing a mixture of rivers - something for everyone, beginners and advanced - and maybe other activities too, depending on weather / water. If you would like to go on this trip, please see Sam at the pub, or email samhardy_02@hotmail.com

Transport: Minibus + cars leaving from sheds at some point Friday eve - see email for details.

Accom: We’re staying in the luxury uni hut in Snowdonia. There are bunkbeds, (woooo) with mattresses (woooo). Please bring sleeping bags. (Also, thermarest/camp mat if you’d rather sleep on the floor.)

Activities: Depending on water / weather, we’ll be doing some of the following: Rivers, surf, sea trip, walking up snowdon. So please bring plenty of layers thermals fleeces etc, to keep you warm on and off the water. Please also bring a waterproof cag or jacket and hiking boots or trainers, and hat and gloves, as we may go walking in the hills on one of the afternoons.

Food: Check with Sam for arrangements, whether its food groups or what - the hut has a kitchen.

Top weekend, can’t wait, xh

In January, we were very glad to welcome Gordon Brown, of Skyak adventures, to Liverpool to talk to us. And very glad to meet up with paddlers from near and far clubs who had all come to listen to salty stories of Scottish islands.

Gordon began by telling us how he had gotten hooked on kayaking from a very early age, and showed us cute pictures of his own kids who are now being indoctrinated in similary webfooted ways, the toddlers enjoying a ride perched in the front hatch of a sea kayak in the clear waters around Armadale, or further afield in downunderland, enjoying the antipodean sunshine.

We were then treated to a complete guided tour of the whole of the Scottish coast - Gordon has visited pretty much every nook and cliff, sometimes many times, at different times of year and in different weather conditions. The only place he really missed out in the talk, was Orkney, because he’s not been there yet, a small ommision he’s getting ready to correct this year. We learned about cave exploring, about rough camping on rocky outcrops and about the ever changing character of the coast, together with the beautiful and widely various geology that can be seen all around Scotland.

A lot of stunning pictures of the Scottish coast, and of hidden away places that can only be reached by boat.

In Gordon’s totally unbiased opinion, having paddled all over the world, in destinations as far afield as New Zealand and India, he reckons the best sea paddling to be had anywhere in the world is in Scotland, or to be more precise, Skye, or to be really particular, in the strech of water just outside his kitchen window.

Well, he’s pretty convincing, looks like he’s entirely right, so if you are planning on holidaying in Scotland, then a trip over to Skye and a day or few days paddling, with Skyak adventures as your guide, is highly recommended.

Thanks everyone for supporting, and especially Mary and all her helpers for organising everything.

Look out for more announcements about upcoming talks. White water is next - please check out liverpoolkayaktalks.info and put the events (or facebook events if you are networkingsitewards inclined) in your diary, and tell anyone you think would enjoy these talks.

Next talk: Dave Fairweather 18th Feb: “One Thing Leads To Another…”
