How to join Liverpool University Canoe Club
Come along to a pool session Thursdays 7.30pm in the pool - the first session is free, as a “try it and see”.
After that, (or before, if you’re already sure), you can join the canoe club by visiting “The Base” in the Guild - three easy steps:
- Get £25 out of the cashpoint (£10 for joining the AU and £15 for the Canoe Club).
- Go to The Base (Its in the student Guild) and say “Please can I join the AU and the Canoe Club”
- Print off and fill in this newmembersform08 and bring it along to a pool session and give it to someone. E.g. Hannah (the membership officer). Or anyone on the committee.
If you are not sure whether this really is the best club in the university (It IS!), and whether it is the best club for you, ask any member of the canoe club - come along to a pool session first - Thursdays 7.30pm in the university swimming pool, bring your swimming things or shorts and T Shirt. We’ll give you info about what the canoe club does, upcoming trips, and socials etc.
Membership forms are available at the Base, at freshers fair, from the membership officer, or download and print off here:
Detailed info about how the club works:
Cost: Canoe Club membership (£15)+ AU (Club Liverpool) membership (£10) = £25.
Note: If you join to another sports club as well, you only need to pay the AU membership once. Additional clubs cost £15 joining fee each.
For non members of Liverpool university, the cost is £15 Canoe Club membership + £25 AU membership = £40.
How does the AU (sport liverpool) memberership work?
You need to join Sport Liverpool Athletic Union (AU) if you join any sports club at the university - this costs £10. After this, each university sports club which you join costs £15. The AU supports all sport activities at Liverpool Uni, takes care of the admin stuff (insurance, sporting body membership etc) and they provide free physio and 3rd party insurance. They also provide funding to us for kit etc and for taking part in inter-university competitions (BUCS and the Christie cup etc). They provide the minibuses which we use. Sport Liverpool also run a bunch of social events - AU nights at the guild - ask the social secretaries for details. Keep your AU card safe - you will need the number on it whenever you join any Uni sports club and in order to compete in competition for the University.
Equipment
Canoe club membership entitles you to use boats and equipment, both in the pool, and on trips. If you have your own boat, there is storage space for your boat.
So, next thing to do, come to the pool sessions, on Thursdays, University pool, 7.30 pm, bring swimwear!
Blurb about us
Liverpool Canoe club welcomes paddlers of all abilities, from complete beginners to complete addicts.
Things to get involved in: pool sessions, opportunities to get out in the outdoors almost every weekend, as well as polo training and social stuff.
Promoting participation at all levels. Do lots of stuff. Try everything. We aim to run as many, as varied, and as fun trips as possible: Rivers, surf, sea, whitewater, placid water, polo, slalom, skills, coaching, as well as trips to inter-University and national competitions.
Non uni members
Our members are mostly students - this is, after all, a University club, and the main aim is to get Liverpool Students and staff out there paddling. We also benefit from having many ex-students and others in our club. In this way we keep the wider base of paddling know-how needed for passing on skills and providing coaching and which allows us to run our trips well. We especially welcome those with paddling experience who can contribute to coaching, safety, and wider paddling knowlege.
Non uni members who join our club need to pay £15 membership, and will also need to join the AU, which costs £25 to non university members and which confers the same benefits mentioned above, as well as being necessary for insurance when using AU vehicles. Please chat to the captain/treasurer/membership officer if you are a non-uni member wishing to join - they have all the forms you will need.

Hi,
What are you doing at washburn on the weekend? I have raced there a few times and loved it.
I am a LJMU student and would love to go if i was allowed?
Thankyou
Danielle x
Hiya Danielle,
Yes, the washburn is releasing on Sunday. As you know, its a dam release river, so it only has definite releases on certain days, and I’ve put those on the calendar, not particularly as a club trip, but just to let folk know so that they can plan it.
Often, a carload of folk will go along and folk do tend to say on the forum if they are planning to go, to share lifts.
I dunno if anyone is planning on going along to the one this Sunday - keep an eye on the forum, some folk might be going.
By the way, yes, we do have quite a few LJMU students in our club, and you are very welcome - look forward to seeing you at the pool hopefully!
See you soon,
Helen
