NAMES BY 10PM THIS SUNDAY

WHAT: Go from point A to point B on a river as fast as you can
WHEN: 10, 11 &12 November (Friday evening till Sunday)
WHERE: River Washburn, North Yorkshire
WHY YOU WANT TO GO:

  • Its practically free (accommodation, transport, entry) for Liv Uni students
  • Its great fun
  • Its suitable for novices and pros alike (novices must have done 1 river trip by the race)
  • Non students can go
  • You get to compete for your Uni

WHO CAN COME:
Anyone can! You must be a student of Liverpool University and have an AU number to enter the BUSA categories. There is a duo and an open class for non-students as well. In addition to entering, people are needed for rescue cover and driving people down.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
In previous years, Liverpool University students have been requested to pay half of the accommodation fee (£17.50 for full camping fee). The University has paid for the rest of the accommodation, entries, and transport costs. Non-students are more than welcome to come along, but the University will not subsidise costs.

WILL I BE OK TO PADDLE THE RIVER?
The River Washburn is mostly grade 2 with a 2 tier broken weir about half way down (Grade III easy). Any one will be able to paddle it, even complete novices. The course takes 8-15mins to paddle and you can have a rescue person paddle down with you if required. You can swim as many times as you like as long as you pass the finish line in your boat the right way up, you finish and score points. Its advisable to have done at least one river trip before the race.

I WANT TO PUT MY NAME DOWN!
If you are a uni student, you can put your name down for K1 (single person kayak), C1 (single person canoe), C2 (2 person canoe), or teams (group of 3, mixed or womens). If you aren’t a uni student, you can put your name down for open or duo event. To put your name down, see me Laura G aka Medic Dave at the pool session on Thursday, phone/text/email. Anyone who helps drive there gets a free pint off me.

Names to be in by 10pm this Sunday.

Announcement: MedicDave

Its going ahead

Theme is sailors, pirates and mermaids! - should be no problem for us lot!

Practice C1 and C2 in the pool before we go

I’ve put up categories I’ve entered people in - read on to see who’s in what and all the details…..
Main update: The White Water Race is indeed still going ahead as planned. Despite the inevitable all-that-could-go-wrong-almost-did, I’m now able to confirm BUSA have received our application, and we are now in it to win it. I’ve yet to confirm what the accommodation arrangements are due to a fluff up by the Guild, but I’ll email out when I do know. It’ll be camping of some description! If all goes well, its heated marquee on the Friday night, party and free food on Saturday night. The party theme is: sailors, pirates and mermaids!!!

Preparation: The next couple of pool sessions should see us having a couple of goes in the C1, C2 and a couple of the other boats before race day.

For more information on the race, visit http://www.bukc.org.uk/whitewater/ (I’m sure they’ll update the webpage soon!) or www.busa.org.uk/canoe

Here are the categories that I’ve entered people for. At least, this was the list that went to BUSA. If your event is either C2 or team, we can switch who’s with who on the day.
If you are unhappy being placed in a particular category or if you require safety cover down the river and have not yet talked to me, email me. If you cannot attend (reasons now permitting: death of immediate family member or your own death) I need to hear ASAP.

A list of all boats found in the private sheds was recorded today(29/03/05)
1. Check to see if your boat is on the list (scroll down)
2. Email Laura (medic dave) at fallingspiral@hotmail.com to
a) confirm details are correct for your boat
b)if you have not yet paid membership and would like to continue using the private sheds
c) recognise any of the boats and can identify their owner

The long debated storage problem of the private sheds has been discussed by the committee members. Currently there are too many boats and not enough space. During the committee meeting, it was agreed that: UNCLAIMED BOATS WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE SHEDS, and most likely be put up for sale on online auction. Up to one boat of each discipline (polo, slalom etc.) may be stored in the private sheds by each fully paid member. Boats must be used at least twice during a 6 month period unless there are extenuating circumstances (injury etc.) otherwise priority will be given to other members of the club. If there are extenuating circumstances either the captain (Vanny), treasurer (Naomi) or secretary (Laura G) should be informed. Unpaid members will be given last priority with regards to boat storage and run the risk of their boat being removed from the shed. It is their own responsibility to pay the membership fee (£15 for the whole year) to the secretary Laura Gould, who can be contacted at fallingspiral@hotmail.com
