Disclaimer Form
Before certain trips, we ask people going on the trip to sign a form similar to the attached disclaimer form.
The purposes of this form include the following:
- To remind participants that, although serious accidents are rare, white water kayaking is intrinsically dangerous.
- To remind participants that canoeing is an “assumed risk” sport - i.e. to remind participants of the principle, common in adventure sports, of taking responsibility for one’s own actions.
- To remind participants that decisions about participation are ultimately the responsibility of the individual themselves - in practice, it is good to discuss your decisions with others, and it is imperative that anyone involved in such discussions give their honest opinion at all times, so that the individual participant can then proceed to make their own decision based on as much information as possible.
- To remind trip participants that those particular individuals who have taken on the jobs of organising transport, logistics, and driving, have not, by dint of this, taken on any greater duty of care than they would already be subject to, had they not taken on the jobs of organising transport, logistics and driving.
