WebInfo
Welcome to the new LUCanoe website, Launched April 2008. Any queries or problems, get in touch:
Many thanks to the previous website officer Vanny for all his work in developing the previous incarnation of the website.
Here are a few pointers for finding your way around the new website.
Browsing Content
You can read the news reports, info pages, forum and vodpod videos by following links on the header bar and sidebars.
Signing up for emails
You can sign up to be in on the club email list - see left panel.
You can also sign up for an “e-newsletter” of this website - this sends a daily digest of any new stories straight to your inbox.
Both of these are subscribe services - you can unsubscribe at any time.
Commenting and using the forum
You can comment on any of the articles here, or write in the forum. You don’t have to log on to do those things, but if you do register and log on, then you get chance to have an avatar etc, and edit your own forum post.
Getting Help
If you need help with something, or if you find bugs or unusable things, or if you have suggestions, you can email Helen, or post on the forum - posting on the forum is good because others may be having the same problems. Of course, if your problem is that you are having problems posting on the forum…
Self registering
Click the login link - you will be prompted to log on or register. Once you have registered, you can write on the forum as yourself, not just as a guest. You will also automatically be added as a Contributor - that means you can also write news stories for the front page.
Contributor - Adding stories to the front page
Once you have registered for the website, you are initially a Contributor. That means you can write a story for the front page - anything - trip announcements, trip reports, social reports. Everyone likes to read about recent trips, socials, tournaments, adventures, what you’ve been up to etc.
Of course stories look nicest if they contain some photos. You can upload photos or embed ones that you keep in albums elsewhere, using the edit options. You can also embed your Youtube video or Google video by pressing the Youtube or Google Video buttons.
Its fine to have more than one report about the same trip etc- its always interesting to hear about everyone’s own experiences. Once you press “Submit for editing,” the story will go off to the web faries, and then appear on the front page, usually quite soon.
This delay is to prevent robots from registering and then writing spam on our site. Once its clear that you actually are a real human being, and not a computerised purveyor of bad things, you can be upgraded so that your stories appear at once, and so that you can edit or change your stories.
Adding Videos
When you write a story, there is a YouTube button on the toolbar. Also a google button. You can use these to add your video so that it is embedded within your story. There is also a Vodpod of videos on the sidebar - if you would like your video added to there, send me the YouTube link, MySpace Link, or whatever, or put it on the forum and I’ll add it.
Adding Pictures
When you write a story, you can upload pictures into it, or alternatively, if your photo is already online, e.g. on facebook, you can find out the URL of the photos, and embed it in your news report.
Alternatively, you can just write your report, and then email me to tell me what photos you would like adding.
Adding word documents
You can do this using the “Add media” button - upload your word document, and then you can insert a link to it in the post you are making.
Editing your story
You can save your story as many times as you like before you publish it. After you’ve published it, you can still edit it, add pictures, whatever, by clicking the “edit” button on the page (you need to be logged in)
Pages
As well as News posts, there are a bunch of Pages available from the left menu. These are intended to be information which we need over time, a repository of info about our club, or about paddling, rather than instant news reports. Some of these pages and info are rather out of date, and most are written by one person (me). So it would be good to update them, and also add more pages, and to get a more rounded view of things contributed from the whole community. The Committee will have access to these pages to change and add to - and any news reports which are info-rich (How to’s etc), will also be used to build more pages. If you have info which you feel would be good to add as pages, please get in touch.
Future Plans
There are many tweaks to be made to the website, and gradually hopefully things will become easier to use, and a good repository of info, reports, and community. For now, the future plans are just to work on getting everything running as smoothly as possible. Once that is achieved, we’ll try adding new features like email notifications of new website reports, and forms for trip sign-ups.
